La casa costruttrice asiatica, Nvidia, ha deciso di spingere l’acceleratore sui nuovi chip grafici basati su processo costruttivo da 28nm; in effetti, dopo l’avventura sul processo costruttivo da 40nm, ora Nvidia intende suggerire i suoi chip su 28nm in accordo con TSMC, ossia Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, con l’intenzione di non ripetere gli errori del passato.
A questo proposito il chief executive officer of Nvidia, Jen-Hsun Huang ha osservato che
We are far better prepared for 28nm than we were for 40nm. Because we took it so much more seriously. We were successful on so many different nodes for so long that we all collectively, as an industry, forgot how hard it is. So, one of the things that we did this time around was to set up an entire organization that is dedicated to advanced nodes. We have had many, many tests chips run on 28nm, we have working silicon
In base a queste considerazioni il processo produttivo a 40nm è stato condizionato da problemi emersi dalla tecnologia stessa e da diversi problemi in fase di produzione e di progettazione. Infatti, Nvidia ha iniziato a sviluppare la sua gamma a 40nm senza conoscere i potenziali problemi ed è in corso in una serie di imprevisti che ha dovuto ritardare il lancio dei suoi principali prodotti basati su architettura Fermi.
Sempre secondo Jen-Hsun Huang
[Our experience with 28nm] is looking really good, it is looking much better than our experience with 40nm. It is just a comprehensive, across-the-board engagement between TSMC and ourselves making sure that we are ready for production ramp when the time comes. So I feel really good about 28nm
Non solo, la stessa Nvidia ha anche precisato che all’inizio di questo mese prevede di avviare il test-drive della nuova generazione Keplero tanto che presenterà i suoi prodotti per il 2012.
